BUSINESS AFFILIATES
Leavenworth Main Street Program
The Kansas Main Street Program was started in 1982 for the purpose of assisting communities with their efforts to save historical buildings, revive their commercial core, strengthen business, control community-eroding sprawl, and to keep a sense of place and community life. Leavenworth Main Street Program is one of several communities receiving assistance from the Kansas Department of Commerce.
The program is based on a strategy developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation tailored to meet local needs and opportunities. The strategy contains four primary areas for action:
- Design: enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings and long-term planning.
- Organization: building consensus and cooperation among the many groups and individuals who have a role in the revitalization process.
- Promotion: marketing the traditional commercial district’s assets to customers, potential investor, new business, local citizens and visitors.
- Economic Restructuring: Strengthening the district’s existing economic base, while finding ways to expand it to meet new opportunities.

Leavenworth Area Development
Established in 1981, Leavenworth Area Development Corporation (LAD) is a private non-profit corporation with a full-time professional staff, with the purpose of promoting and assisting the location of new and expanding business in Leavenworth County. LAD is governed by a board of directors from the public and private sectors. Funding for operations comes primarily through financial support from the Leavenworth County Commission, the cities of Leavenworth, Lansing, Tonganoxie, Basehor, other private organizations and a number of businesses throughout the county.
There are many roles and aspects to economic development. LAD is just one of many groups engaged in economic development activities. Like private business, each group has its own “specialty” or role in economic development. Some of these organizations besides LAD include: 1) the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau; 2) the Main Street Program; 3) the Leavenworth County Port Authority; 4) the Kansas Department of Commerce; 5) the U.S. Small Business Administration; and 6) the Kansas City Area Development Council to name just a few.
Leavenworth Area Development provides the necessary “link” between the federal, state and local assistance and business desiring to locate or expand in Leavenworth County. LAD also serves as the facilitator, coordinator and many times partner in many development projects. In Leavenworth County, LAD is the only group that provides the traditional economic development activities that include the gathering, maintaining, packaging and distribution (marketing) of a wide range of current information, as well as, providing confidential and highly technical professional assistance needed by business and industry desiring to locate or expand a business in Leavenworth County. Without an organization such as LAD, businesses would not be aware and thus would be unlikely to take advantage of the federal, state or local programs.

American Land Title Association
The American Land Title Association, founded in 1907, is the national trade association and voice of the abstract* and title insurance industry. ALTA members search, review and insure land titles to protect home buyers and mortgage lenders who invest in real estate. ALTA is headquartered in Washington, DC.
Members of the association are in business in most counties across the nation. Nearly all title insurance companies hold ALTA membership, in addition to abstracters* and title agents. Nearly 2,000 title agents, abstracters, and title insurance companies are Active members, ranging from small, one-county operations, to large national title insurers. Associate members of ALTA may include attorneys, builders, developers, lenders, real estate brokers, surveyors, consultants, educational institutions, computer services firms, and related national trade associations.
ALTA members advocate safe and efficient transfer of real estate and insist on high standards when searching land title records and preparing insurance documents. The industry seeks to eliminate risk before insuring, which provides the insured with the best possible chance of avoiding land title problems. But, title difficulties can and do occur, and members offer both owner’s and lender’s title insurance as effective safeguards.
For a one-time cost at the real estate closing, title insurance will identify title problems found in a title search of public records, will pay valid claims, and will pay for defending against an attack on title as insured.
Professionals in the real estate market, as well as the home buying public, benefit considerably from the commitment to excellence that is routine in the work of ALTA members. Involvement by a title company is often thought of as the catalyst that allows a real estate closing to proceed smoothly until completed.
